Do any councils use a formula to calculate their annual rates? eg. Is business say 1.5x that of residential or is rural residential say 75% of residential or do you not use a formula?

        Hi Marilyn,

We changed our formula calculation this year (2017/2018) and went to relative change based on valuations. Which Council thought was a fair and equitable approach to splitting, we do however have base amounts for residential and minimums for our business categories.

We took this from the IPART discussion paper April 2016 – ‘Freezing existing rate paths’ on pg. 40 even though our proposed merger has been cancelled.

I’m happy to provide further information if you need, just drop me an email or give me a call.

          Marilyn,
For the former Bankstown Council, we use a percentage calculation.
Residential pay 69% of the total ordinary rates, and business pay 31% of the total ordinary rates.

            Hi Marilyn

At Ku-ring-gai ours is on percentage Business pay 8% and Residential pay 92% of the total ordinary rates.

This split is reviewed at each Gval.

            Robert
