      Hi,

We are in the process of reviewing some of our rating categorisations and I was wondering how, for those councils that have them, you categorise Turf Farms. We are currently rating them as Farmland as in the past we have treated the turf as a crop.

      Any comments would be appreciated.

      Thanks
      Pete

hi Pete, I hope you are well .. this is a good one, do you know if a turf farmer qualifies as a primary producer with the ATO? If the ATO think they are croppers/cultivators, etc, than that may help the farmland argument.
        Just a thought

Hi Peter – we treat turf farms as farmland (subject to usual other tests) on the basis it is horticulture defined at http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ as “the science and art of growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants” (my lawn may not be very “ornamental” but you get the idea).

            Hi Peter,

Penrith City Council has many turf farms and we categorise them as Farmland on the basis that it is a horticultural activity.

When I was working at Hawkesbury Council many years ago there were a lot of turf farms. They always used to be categorized and rated as Farmland.

Not sure how Hawkesbury treats them now. Give Dave Nelson a call.

              Regards
              Trevor

                Hi Peter,

Blacktown has a few turf farms and we also categorise them as farmland.

                Thanks
                Brad
