      Hi,

Just wanting to hear from anyone who has wind farms in their Shire. We currently have 2, the turbines have been provided with separate valuations, and subsequently rated separately.

Council has classified these wind turbines are business, land owner/leasee’s are not happy and are in the process of lodging a category objection.

Our Northwest Rates group all agreed that these should be business. I would love to hear anyone elses thoughts, knowledge, case law etc that would back our determination.

        Hi Emma

Business, definitely cant be residential, farmland or mining. Would be interested in seeing the reasons for any other category.

        Regards,
        Andrew

          Hi Emma

An interesting question. I recall there being a post back in 2008 regarding the rating of wind farms and whether they should be rated and categorized business. You can view the post in the archives.

I agree with Andrew. Should be business. Does not fit under the category of farmland. Definitely not residential or mining.

As the parcels of land are leased all the more reason to be categorized Business.

I know that out at Blayney, down towards Goulburn and near Lake George (on ACT border) have wind farms. Perhaps it may be worthwhile ringing those Councils to see if they can assist.

          Regards
          Trevor

            Hi Emma,

Following Trevor’s lead… we just checked with Upper Lachlan which has about 10 wind farms. They advise there was initially some discussion about the Wind Farms’ categorisation, and it was agreed they are business. They are currently being rated business.

Hope this helps? Please let me know if you’d like an introduction to someone there.

            Kind regards

            Richard
