      Good Afternoon

University of NSW has a property in Griffith that they own and are using as a rural doctors training facility. They have requested an exemption because they are the same as TAFE (as it states in email).
Firstly is this exemption 556 (l) Land vested in a university (because they own the land). Also what exemption does TAFE come under, is it the same(??) or does it come under 555 – schools..
      Any help would be appreciated.
      With thanks

        Hi Megan

TAFE are exempt as the sites are owned by the Crown & TAFE is a State Govt organisation & are not under lease for private purposes, not with standing that they charge a fee for their service.

You will generally find that Universities are set up under Commonwealth legislation & as such are exempt. Andrew Butcher from Campbelltown might be able to provide you with more insight into this.

Yes it would probably come under 556 but I would be asking them to tell ,e what Sec they are claiming under.

            Hello

Under Section 556 Land that is vested in a university are exempt together with a training facility, however we have also just received a letter from the University requesting exemption for a property which is being used to house students. The property is a single dwelling and it seems the students are boarding at the property. Can someone please advise if this is also exempt as it is being used for college purposes or should the accomodation be rateable.
            Mary
